a simple thank you.

soon after our wedding, phil and i moved out to minnesota for phil to begin medical school.  we didn't know a soul out there.  we had no family or friends anywhere near us.  i had just changed my last name to his and suddenly even my own name wasn't familiar to me.

it was just him and i together, starting this new life together.  and at first, it was exciting to be 'just us' on this adventure together.  we said goodbye to everyone we knew, left our jobs, our apartments, our church family, and took off on a roadtrip as newlyweds.  we moved into a teeny apartment on the eighth floor of a building in the middle of downtown.  there was this huge thunderstorm one night during our first week there.  and because it was august and because we were from california where rain in the summertime is a very rare occurrence,  this booming thunderstorm with its streaks of lightning illuminating the sky totally freaked us out.  to put it mildly.  we even wondered if we were supposed to take shelter somewhere and if so, where?  yep.  newbies.

at least we had each other in that "you and me against the world" sort of way in those first few days and weeks.

but then phil began his schooling and i was left alone in this new life.  it was pretty tough to get my bearings and it was downright lonely a lot of the time.

once or twice i found myself wondering how long it would take for anybody to notice if phil and i were to die in that teeny apartment.  i figured it would most likely be our next door neighbor who we never actually met because he liked to hole himself up in his apartment day and night smoking out and keeping his computer volume turned All The Way Up so that we could hear through the wall whenever one of his aol chat buddies messaged him.  and whenever he responded.  i also figured it would be maybe a month or so before even he noticed the stench of our decomposing bodies.

yes, a definite morbid line of thought.  and pretty unsettling to wonder about when you don't know a single person besides your new husband.

but then, things slowly started changing for the better.  we joined a small group through the church we had been attending.  this small group was comprised of eight other newly married couples and it was so nice to connect with others in the same stage of life and to find many commonalities between us.

i stopped wondering how long it would take for somebody to notice if we died because i figured the answer would now be one week, maybe two.  being that our small group met weekly, probably someone there would notice our absence and maybe call to find out what happened to us.  strange how i found figuring even that out oddly comforting.

so we began to feel less isolated as we kept meeting with our small group who became our friends who eventually became like family to us when we had none out there.  and i can't tell you how much those friends meant to me.  especially when we had mikey and they came around us and loved on him even when he went through his extreme stranger anxiety stage.  and we grew closer through playdates and regular gatherings just to enjoy one another's company.  then we had allie and we knew we had trusted friends who we could ask to stay with mikey while we were in the hospital.  like i said, they were like family to us.

and then came the day when we had to move back to california.  those goodbyes weren't easy.  especially the ones said at the airport where i had a one-way flight booked.  and one dear friend who cried hard over that last goodbye.  i've moved countless times in my life and she was the only person to cry like that over my leaving.

that's when i knew i had a friend for life.  and i consider myself extremely blessed to count her as a precious friend.

because even though we live far apart now,

and we don't get to keep in regular contact like we used to,

she still manages to somehow remember...

each of my kids' birthdays.

and somehow manages to send each one (even includes a little something for pesky little sisters)

a surprise birthday package

filled with exactly the things they totally love.  (he still looks at this book every day!)

she even somehow understands the plight of the little sister with the last birthday in the family,

and sends the pesky little sister her very own birthday box...

even though she's currently expecting her own fourth baby.

and so a simple thank you

for being that person in my kids' (and my) life...

just somehow seems like not quite enough.  (it finally fits, btw, and i LOVE him in it!)

so this one's for you, dear lorie.  your friendship means more to me than i can ever say and my kids love their 'auntie lorie' and 'uncle adam' very very much!!  we can't wait for your little one to get here and are expecting lots and lots of pictures and updates, ok?  :)

de nile.

they say it's not just a river.

jonut aka jonasu aka (most recently) jonaco-taco has sneakily gone and turned five months old on me.  *collective gasp*.  yes, that sure went fast!  and yes, i still think he's a newborn.  or at least he should be.  and why yes, i do tell people he's only three months old when they ask.  how'd you know?

and i wonder what it could mean when most of my nicknames for the poor kid are food-related?  hm, will have to ponder that at a later date.

because today, my friends, we shall dwell upon jonutter-butter in all his neonatey goodness.  here he is at 2.5 months old.  his true and rightful age.

or here at barely 3 months old, listening to daddy jamming on his guitar.  when he still spent most of his days (and nights) swaddled up tight as a bug in a rug.

it's a bird!  it's a plane!  it's 3-month-old superbaby!

so let's go ahead and humor the mommy who put her 4-month-old in this 0-3 month romper that he has obviously outgrown because she didn't get a picture of him in it when it actually did fit.

and let's not pass judgment on this same mommy who only last week busted out the play mat for her infant (ok, technically 5-month-old) son.  he IS only three months old, right?

it is a very, very good thing that jonacho loves having everyone around him and conversely hates to be alone.  hates it, i tell you.  it is a very, very good trait in a fourth child because uh, see how the others tend to flock to him and his "new" toys?

remember how i said jonah doesn't like to be alone?  he actually prefers to nap out here in the middle of the action rather than be banished to a dark and quiet room.  all alone.  often phil or i will look over at him and see him zonked out while the other kiddos and dog are running amok, using outside voices inside, and causing general pandemonium and mayhem all around his blissfully unconscious self.

wait, what's that you say?  you've never seen a newborn roll over, prop his own head up, and work the beginnings of an army crawl before?  that it's more of a 5-month-old's accomplishments?  well, to that i [modestly] say, my son is very, very advanced for his age.

well, newborns are very flexible, aren't they?

ok, so i have never been to de nile, but i seem to be floating down it just fine, thank you very much.

happy five months to my infant, newborn son!  ;)

trademark follow-up.

ok, because inquiring minds want to know...

this is one of about four pictures of me as a baby.  i have no idea how old i am here.  and because i have a giant hat on my head, it's a little hard to tell if i had the crazy hair in the back.  but i'm pretty sure i didn't since i don't remember my parents ever mentioning it and because my hair in front looks like it's laying down as normal hair does.

this here is baby phil.  and it's looking pretty clear that the tsai baby hair is passed down the tsai ancestral line.

which makes it official, folks.  ALL four of my little monkeys are carbon copies of their daddy and bear little to no resemblance to me.  sheesh.

text talk.

before i get to the post, i just wanted to say thank you for checking in on us here on the blog!  and to my faithful few- THANK YOU for your listening ear and for taking the time to leave a comment, both here and on fb (extra thanks for the ones left here as they're easiest to include when printing the blog books).  i read every one (sometimes more than once!) and have felt the encouragement and love from them and appreciate you more than i can say.  blogging has been my way of celebrating God's marvelous grace in my life and enjoying the blessing of these little ones.  knowing you're there and loving on my family has brought me a whole bunch of joy.  so truly, thank you.

just sayin'.

********

ok, so i'm rewinding three months since i never got a chance to post this back in may.  which is when it happened.

one afternoon, out of the clear blue sky, phil sent me a text.  now, that part is not so unusual as that is our main form of communication when he's at work.  the unusual part was that he got off work early (highly atypical) and anytime he gets off work early feels kinda like a party.  especially those last few months when he was working every day including weekends trying to juggle work in three different hospitals.  those were some rough months.  so suffice it to say, he was feeling jovial over a free afternoon.  from his joviality came this text talk:

phil: wanna go circus?
me: today?
phil: sure.
me: ...ok!

so he got home, we loaded up the kids, and off we went to the circus!  where we beheld sights such as...

a woman spinning around and suspended from her head, people!

amazing feats of chin strength!

so, i wonder how one discovers this abnormal strength in one's chin?

well, this doesn't look safe.  surely he jests!

ta da!  he surely jesteth not.  that was oddly cool.

someone found the circus shenanigans a bit too loud, however.

and then the gypsies!  that bar seems a mite low, don't you think?  and did you notice the FLAME OF FIRE there in the middle?  kids, do not try this at home.  (allie liked this particular act as she recently won the limbo contest at her school and impressed all with her flexibility.  but her bar was not quite as low as this.  and was thankfully sans the FLAME OF FIRE).

how...

low...

can...

you... (ouch, hot!!)

go!

turned out to be a very fun, very spontaneous afternoon.  always nice to mix it up now and again.  my kids' daddy?  well, he's simply the best.  :)

trademark.

trademark [treyd-mahrk]:
noun
     2. a distinctive mark or feature particularly characteristic of or identified with a person or thing.

well, he just wouldn't be a tsai baby without it!  (jonah, 4 months)

i shall now present the evidence:

exhibit a: mikey, 3 months

exhibit b: allie, 3 months

exhibit c: lauren, 4 months

see?  they've all got daddy's nose!

what?

what did you think i was referring to?  ;)

happy weekend, friends!

debf, part two.

so continuing lauren's Day of Epic Birthday Fun, we headed off for...

another of this ratty-barbie-princess-dress-wearing-three-year-old's favorite things.

just in time for hello kitty!

so even though she got her own cup filled with her favorite flavor (chocolate) and favorite toppings (gummy bears, m&ms, chocolate chips, and mini peanut butter cups- yes, the really healthy stuff), she preferred to dip into the cup her daddy and i were sharing.  but mostly to eat the mochi bits out of it.

ok lauren, so how old are you now?
no, not anymore...

not quite yet...

um, no.

"i have an idea, mommy!"

"let me make a face at you to distract you from becoming disturbed over the fact that i don't know how old i am.  how's this?"

"no?  well then, how about this?"

those silly faces she makes...  i seriously don't know where she gets it from.

i sure hope it doesn't run in the family.

i believe i mentioned this one loves ice cream (don't tell her it's frozen yogurt), right?  she did her best to lick her bowl clean long after everyone else was done.

this is the face of a happy camper.

checking to see if any stray bits of chocolate were left behind.

the DEBF continued at home after her nap.  i brought her out of bed and plunked her down at the table so we could do her cake.  she was still a little bleary-eyed.  being the fun parents we are, we decided to let them eat cake before dinner that night.  (and cuz uh, i was going to have dinner with some friends and needed to get going but didn't want to miss her cake time).

okay so lauren, for real how old are you now?
um, no...

not quite that either...

ah, there it is!

she patiently endured our singing to her...

then daddy let her cut her own piece of cake, which she thought was a great idea.  not sure which side she was planning to leave for the rest of us, though!

and that is how her DEBF went down.

happy happy birthday, my precious lauren!  you bring so much joy and laughter to our family and we love you so very much.  God made you so uniquely YOU with your spunky, silly nature with a dash of spice thrown in.  i'm so happy you're part of our family, dear daughter of mine!
