text talk.

before i get to the post, i just wanted to say thank you for checking in on us here on the blog!  and to my faithful few- THANK YOU for your listening ear and for taking the time to leave a comment, both here and on fb (extra thanks for the ones left here as they're easiest to include when printing the blog books).  i read every one (sometimes more than once!) and have felt the encouragement and love from them and appreciate you more than i can say.  blogging has been my way of celebrating God's marvelous grace in my life and enjoying the blessing of these little ones.  knowing you're there and loving on my family has brought me a whole bunch of joy.  so truly, thank you.

just sayin'.

********

ok, so i'm rewinding three months since i never got a chance to post this back in may.  which is when it happened.

one afternoon, out of the clear blue sky, phil sent me a text.  now, that part is not so unusual as that is our main form of communication when he's at work.  the unusual part was that he got off work early (highly atypical) and anytime he gets off work early feels kinda like a party.  especially those last few months when he was working every day including weekends trying to juggle work in three different hospitals.  those were some rough months.  so suffice it to say, he was feeling jovial over a free afternoon.  from his joviality came this text talk:

phil: wanna go circus?
me: today?
phil: sure.
me: ...ok!

so he got home, we loaded up the kids, and off we went to the circus!  where we beheld sights such as...

a woman spinning around and suspended from her head, people!

amazing feats of chin strength!

so, i wonder how one discovers this abnormal strength in one's chin?

well, this doesn't look safe.  surely he jests!

ta da!  he surely jesteth not.  that was oddly cool.

someone found the circus shenanigans a bit too loud, however.

and then the gypsies!  that bar seems a mite low, don't you think?  and did you notice the FLAME OF FIRE there in the middle?  kids, do not try this at home.  (allie liked this particular act as she recently won the limbo contest at her school and impressed all with her flexibility.  but her bar was not quite as low as this.  and was thankfully sans the FLAME OF FIRE).

how...

low...

can...

you... (ouch, hot!!)

go!

turned out to be a very fun, very spontaneous afternoon.  always nice to mix it up now and again.  my kids' daddy?  well, he's simply the best.  :)

trademark.

trademark [treyd-mahrk]:

     2. a distinctive mark or feature particularly characteristic of or identified with a person or thing.

well, he just wouldn't be a tsai baby without it!  (jonah, 4 months)

i shall now present the evidence:

exhibit a: mikey, 3 months

exhibit b: allie, 3 months

exhibit c: lauren, 4 months

see?  they've all got daddy's nose!

what?

what did you think i was referring to?  ;)

happy weekend, friends!

debf, part two.

so continuing lauren's Day of Epic Birthday Fun, we headed off for...

another of this ratty-barbie-princess-dress-wearing-three-year-old's favorite things.

just in time for hello kitty!

so even though she got her own cup filled with her favorite flavor (chocolate) and favorite toppings (gummy bears, m&ms, chocolate chips, and mini peanut butter cups- yes, the really healthy stuff), she preferred to dip into the cup her daddy and i were sharing.  but mostly to eat the mochi bits out of it.

ok lauren, so how old are you now?
no, not anymore...

not quite yet...

um, no.

"i have an idea, mommy!"

"let me make a face at you to distract you from becoming disturbed over the fact that i don't know how old i am.  how's this?"

"no?  well then, how about this?"

those silly faces she makes...  i seriously don't know where she gets it from.

i sure hope it doesn't run in the family.

i believe i mentioned this one loves ice cream (don't tell her it's frozen yogurt), right?  she did her best to lick her bowl clean long after everyone else was done.

this is the face of a happy camper.

checking to see if any stray bits of chocolate were left behind.

the DEBF continued at home after her nap.  i brought her out of bed and plunked her down at the table so we could do her cake.  she was still a little bleary-eyed.  being the fun parents we are, we decided to let them eat cake before dinner that night.  (and cuz uh, i was going to have dinner with some friends and needed to get going but didn't want to miss her cake time).

okay so lauren, for real how old are you now?
um, no...

not quite that either...

ah, there it is!

she patiently endured our singing to her...

then daddy let her cut her own piece of cake, which she thought was a great idea.  not sure which side she was planning to leave for the rest of us, though!

and that is how her DEBF went down.

happy happy birthday, my precious lauren!  you bring so much joy and laughter to our family and we love you so very much.  God made you so uniquely YOU with your spunky, silly nature with a dash of spice thrown in.  i'm so happy you're part of our family, dear daughter of mine!

debf, part one.

oops!  i realized i forgot to mention where we stayed while on vacation, so for those of you who were wondering, we stayed at the dreams resort and spa.  highly recommended.  remember, todo incluido, baby!

ok, so that bit of info has nothing to do with the present post at hand.  just tying up a loose end first.  :)

this post has to do with child number three, who went and turned three in the midst of moving, finishing fellowship, and celebrating a decade-old marriage.  so yes, her birthday was actually spent at her grandparents' house while her parents were off gallivanting in another country.  hey, we make no claims on being parents of the year.  for this year, anyway.  but!  her grandparents had a cake and little party for her on her birthday.  so maybe they've got a better shot at being grandparents of the year.  they've got it in my book.

and her big sister also had her birthday at her grandparents' house this year, too.

man.

*guilt.*

so uh, maybe big birthday bashes are in order for next year...

aaanyway, we had lauren's Day of Epic Birthday Fun (DEBF) just a tad late this year.  by a couple weeks.  but who's counting, right?

so we went to pretend city to kick off the DEBF!  and if the birthday girl wants to wear a ratty barbie princess dress for three days straight and out in public on her DEBF, why shouldn't she?

cruising the streets (read: mommy pushing her around) in this little red coupe was one of her three favorite things at pretend city.

one (ok, there are many, but this is just one) good thing about having a bunch of kids is that they manage to have fun together no matter where they are.  give 'em some random sticks and boxes and they can play for hours by rules only they understand.  so while this place was a bit young for the older two, they all still had a great time playing together.

whatcha lookin' at, chick?

this was lauren's second of three favorite things at pretend city- the dentist's chair.  but maybe not phil's favorite.  maybe it had something to do with this crazed-looking-barbie-princess-dress-wearing-three-year-old coming at him with oversized dentist tools.  ;)

little back story-- thanks to the recommendation of a great dentist by my friend k, our kids LOVE going to the dentist.  so much so that they actually play dentist at home and use the same words he uses, like "mr. whistler" and "sugar buggies".  and the part they love most about going to dr. steve is the big, wooden treasure chest they get to visit at the end.  being one who never liked going to the dentist, it amazes me that our kids love theirs so much that they actually pretend to BE him at home.  and that's the most glowing recommendation as i can give.  so thanks, dr. steve!

lauren promptly kicked daddy out of the chair to become the patient herself.  mikey, who unfortunately has soft teeth like his dad, has spent quite a bit of time in the dentist chair and is something of an expert with all these tools.

hmm, that dentist smock seems kinda... snug.

time to floss!  (lauren gets quite a bit of practice being the patient at home).

mommy's rule was to pretend and not actually put the tools in the patient's mouth.  this seems awfully close to breaking that rule.

and this most definitely is a breach of that rule.

"say 'eee', daddy!"

checkup's all done and my, what a gleaming set of chompers you've got there!  and an appropriately sized toothbrush to match!

mr. tooth says see you in six months!

me and my boys.

me and 75% of my kids.

and me with the whole crew.  and this is pretty much why we don't attempt many pictures of all of 'em.

and this was lauren's third of three favorite things at pretend city!

her favorite thing no matter where we are?  making faces whenever the camera is pointed her way.

be back later with part two of lauren's DEBF!  ;)

the best.

as nice as it was to be away on vacation, the best part was still coming back to our little monkeys.

the girls loved the dresses we brought back for them.  :)

jonah liked chilling with grandpa watching korean tv in his study.

he wasn't too sure about this arrangement, though.

grandma and grandpa.  totally love 'em.

and that's the end of our wonderful week celebrating some pretty cool milestones.  :)
